Meet Emma, the director and brains behind The Kind Sunscreen. We talk all things about business and the journey she has had with the brand, along with SPF itself and its important role in life. For us, being based in Queensland we find it so important to protect yourself from the sun whenever you can and to be sure SPF is something that you include in your morning routine, everyday. Tell us a little bit about your journey with The Kind Sunscreen and how it all started.
Always believing that less is more (for ourselves and our planet), once I had my son, it became all the more important. I had never been a sunscreen user and the older I got the more sun damage I could see on my skin and so it became essential to create a sunscreen I wanted to wear but was also safe for my baby’s sensitive skin. When I looked at the brands available on the market, they had endless ingredients listed and so that then became my focus – minimal ingredients that is kind for everyone including our environment especially our oceans.
Why is SPF so important?
Because prevention is key. In Australia particularly, our sun is so harsh and we love to be outdoors therefore we (men, women & children) need to be wearing our sunscreen no matter the season… every single day. Sunscreen not only protects from skin cancer, it also saves you trying to treat the skin damage once it has occurred. And with our formula you are also looking after and improving your overall skin health because of the oils we use.
What is the most rewarding part of owning your own business?
So many rewarding parts – the people and friendships I’ve made here and internationally, the compliments and kind words from our customers and wholesalers (never in my widest dreams could I have expected TKS would be so well received), being able to make my own schedule so I can spend more time with my 3 year old son and watch my little idea come to life and evolve.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to start their own business?
Trust your instinct and your customers, ask questions or for help and be ok with learning along the way. If you feel overwhelmed, break it down and take it step by step.
What has been your biggest accomplishment to date with TKS?
Part of my original idea was to be able to offer TKS in minibars of boutique hotels such as The Calile. You can now find us there!
Have you always been an SPF wearer?
I very much wish I had been because now that I am in my 40’s I can see all my sun damage. I am spending money to try treat and fix would could have been prevented had I worn sunscreen every day.
Do you plan on branching into other products? Anything we should keep an eye out for?
We are launching a family friendly size in August which is exciting and then ... watch this space!
Lastly, what is your favourite Mamph piece?
Do I have to pick just one! I love the floret scoop one piece, it’s a beautiful cut. And if I can chose two it would be highwaisted bottom with a string top in olive because it’s so classically stylish.
